East Coast band Pitter Patter deliver sharp reflections on modern life with new single "Oh? Possum!"

Pittsburgh-based quartet Pitter Patter has closed 2024 with their first release of the year, the introspective and striking new single "Oh? Possum!" Known for blending Midwest emo influences with indie rock charm, the group takes a grounded, honest look at life’s unpredictability and struggles in their latest offering.

Following the success of their debut album Naturally Selected, which featured the 2022 breakout track "treehouse", Pitter Patter continue to refine their sound while pushing into new territory. On "Oh? Possum!", the band embrace their Midwest emo inspirations more deeply than ever, layering shimmering guitar work with candid, unvarnished lyricism. This combination allows the track to resonate with listeners seeking relatability in a complex world.

Speaking on the themes of the single, vocalist and guitarist Seth Berkin shared the song’s central message:

"The main message in this song is that some things are out of your control, aspects of life that are unfair, yet we are all here doing our best to make the most out of the life we are given."

Lyrically, "Oh? Possum!" features subtle yet impactful references to the animal kingdom, weaving them into its broader commentary on human experiences. Berkin elaborated on the track title and its inspiration:

"There are plenty of references to animals woven throughout the track. Possums are exterminated, run over by cars, and overall have a tough time coexisting with humans. When I wrote the song, I too was struggling to coexist with humans as I was dealing with extreme anxiety."

Musically, "Oh? Possum!" showcases the band’s ability to craft an engaging and textured soundscape. The twinkling guitars, reminiscent of hallmark Midwest emo tones, provide an ideal backdrop for Berkin’s vocals, which carry the weight of vulnerability while remaining hopeful. This dynamic is supported by the interplay between Dave Connuck’s bass and Brian Ihejurobi’s drums, while Benji Cohen’s guitar work adds subtle depth and movement to the track.

For fans familiar with Pitter Patter’s debut album, the new single represents an evolution without abandoning the upbeat yet reflective sensibilities that first put them on the map. Their sound remains accessible yet honest, offering listeners both comfort and insight.

Since emerging with their 2022 single "treehouse", Pitter Patter have consistently blended earnest songwriting with sharp instrumentation, a balance they maintain effortlessly on "Oh? Possum!". Drawing from influences such as Young Culture and Between You & Me, the band’s approach combines personal, often sombre themes with vibrant musical execution.

With "Oh? Possum!", Pitter Patter invite listeners into their world, one that acknowledges life’s challenges while celebrating perseverance. It’s a track that speaks to those who find solace in music that mirrors the complexities of everyday life without overcomplicating its message.
