Gig: Julien Baker @ EartH, London
On 21 November, Julien Baker delivered a breathtaking finale to her multi-night run at London’s EartH, marking her only European appearance of the year.
The evening began with Katie Malco, whose sparse, heartfelt set captured everyone’s attention. Songs like "Animal" showcased her raw storytelling, her voice cutting through the room with disarming honesty. Following Malco, SOAK shifted the mood with their ethereal, textured sound. Highlights included "Purgatory," a standout track from their album If I Never Know You Like This Again, blending dreamy tones with a steady, energizing rhythm.
Fans, already thrilled by the rarity of Baker’s visit, were treated to an unforgettable surprise when boygenius bandmate Lucy Dacus joined the stage. Dacus delivered a short but impactful set, debuting a brand-new song and closing with a powerful performance of "Night Shift," where Baker stepped in for a heartfelt duet. The unannounced appearance added an unexpected layer of emotion and connection, making an already special night even more remarkable.
By the time Baker took the stage, the atmosphere was electric. Opening with "Over," she immediately drew the audience in, delivering a set that spanned her discography, from Sprained Ankle to Turn Out the Lights and Little Oblivions. Moments like the searing "Hardline" and a reverent cover of Frightened Rabbit’s "The Woodpile" showcased her emotional depth and precision. She closed the night with “Everybody Does,” performed with such raw vulnerability that it felt like a shared confession, leaving the room in awe of her ability to make even the largest space feel deeply personal.
