Gig: Softcult @ The Underworld, London
Having just released their latest EP Heaven earlier this year, the grunge duo Softcult hit the road again for a short run of UK shows with the last one being at The Underworld on 12 November. With London-based indie-rock quartet Bleach Lab rounding up the lineup, the audience was treated to a night filled with dreamy guitar sounds, haunting melodies, grungy riffs and heartfelt lyrics.
Bleach Lab
Stepping on the stage to an already nicely filled venue, Bleach Lab didn’t waste much time capturing the audience’s attention with their mellow and melancholic sound. They saw some swaying and gentle head nodding right away and some clapping towards the end of their set. The quartet set the tone for the evening with their ethereal and dreamy vocal melodies which were accompanied by chimey guitar riffs, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere, preparing the audience for what was yet to come.
Softcult
As the lights dimmed for the final time and Softcult took to the stage, the audience cheered in anticipation and excitement, and was off their feet dancing along right from the start. Being known for their dreamy shoegaze sound, mixed with grunge and punk elements, as well as their DIY spirit and love for the 90’s riot grrrl movement, the Canadian duo (four-piece for their live shows) immediately changed the atmosphere in the room with their dreamy vocals and gloomy yet energetic guitar sounds. Especially crowd favourites such as ‘Take It Off’, ‘BWBB’, ‘Perfect Blue’ and ‘Someone2Me’ saw the audience turn into one big choir singing along on the top of their lungs. The band played a good mix of songs that created a good dynamic throughout their set before sending everyone off with the epic and emotionally heavy ‘Uzumaki’, leaving the crowd highly excited.
