End of year review

By Jez Pennington

As we bid farewell to a remarkable year, we at SceneMusicMedia - creators behind The Scene magazine and radio - find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey that has unfolded.

From the moment we embarked in June of this year, our mission has been clear: to be facilitators of the scene we hope to see; to foster community and create a space where musicians, writers, photographers, and artists can amplify their voices and showcase their talents.

Little did we know that we would be so warmly embraced.

Every day since has been defined by the incredible individuals who have joined us along the way. Whether you’re creating with us, facilitating connections or one of the many artists we’ve listened to, talked about or talked to, we can only express our sincere gratitude.

So before we close out the year, we invite you to join us in revisiting some highlights from 2023. As we look back with gratitude, we also look forward to the exciting possibilities that the coming year holds for The Scene nd the community that makes it come alive.

2023 highlights

  • attended 4 festivals - 2000trees, ArcTanGent, Misery Loves Company, Reading and Leeds

  • interviewed 27 artists for 29 interviews

  • reviewed 62 albums and EPs

  • attended, reviewed and photographed 25 live shows

  • highlighted 21 unsigned artists across 30 radio episodes and 330+ total artists

  • 20,500+ website visitors

  • $10 website ad revenue earned

The eagle eyes among you might have noticed, we’re also incredibly proud to highlight that each episode of the radio show opened with a band that includes a female or non-binary member.

2024 goals

We’re proud of everything we’ve achieved in 6 months of 2023. Looking ahead to next year, of course we want to accomplish even more.

Some of our goals include:

  • hiring more contributors to the magazine, radio show and operations

  • ability to fairly monetarily compensate contributors

  • expanding the radio show, exploring syndication and a second show

  • opening all radio shows with bands that include a person of colour

  • highlighting minimum one new unsigned artist per week on the radio show

  • grant funding to support the launch of a Youtube channel

  • launching a live performance / streaming series

  • plus more gigs, more reviews, more interviews

If you think you can help, or want to be part of the whirlwind, please do get in touch. In the meantime, we cannot thank you enough for your enthusiasm and kindness.

Thank you, see you next year,

Kelly & Thom
